…I swiftly reached over and pulled the $10 back from the table. I looked her dead in the eye and said, “You’re absolutely right — this isn’t the 1950s… and that kind of attitude doesn’t deserve any tip at all.”

My husband raised his eyebrows, clearly impressed, while the waitress stood frozen for a moment, her smirk fading.

We got up and left, still smiling from his big promotion — and now, also from the satisfaction of standing up for basic respect.
Moral of the story: Gratitude is earned, not demanded.
